Croatia is a country in the Balkans (which is a part of Europe). It used to be a part of Yugoslavia which consisted of Slovenia, Croatia, Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro and Macedonia. In Croatia there are many famous cities and one of them that was war torn is called Vukovar. Vukovar was badly shelled but not as bad Sarajevo. There is another city called Zagreb. Zagreb is the capital of Croatia. Zagreb wasn't war torn because it wasn't the main target of the Serbian army. Zagreb was the city that my parents lived in. My dad volunteered to fight for the U.N. In the war but the U.N. didn't do anything. My mom had to hide in bomb shelters when bombs were dropped. Next Dubrovnik. Dubrovnik is a famous city because of it's castle. The castle was never badly damaged ever in history except for this war. The Serbian army wanted to scare people because they wanted to be feared, (Show of Strength). Now the castle is being protected by the U.N.'s Protective System. Game of Thrones is filmed there and now the rumor going around is that Star Wars: Episode VIII will be filmed there. Frano Tudman was the president at the time of the war. He made a very moving speech on October 5th 1991 about fighting "Greater Serbia". When Vukovar started getting bombed then Tudman ordered the National Guard to start fighting back and started the Battle of the Barracks. That battle was Croatian national guard and the Croatian Army against the Yugoslavian Army.
Croatia, War
In 1991 Croatia and Slovenia decided to secede from Yugoslavia but Serbia wouldn't let them because Croatia had resources like the sea. That started the war. Before that all of the armies from the other republics were extracted to Serbia. Now Serbia had all of the powerful machinery and the other republics had nothing. So Croatia drafted boys who were 18 years old. They wold train them for war and start fighting. Serbia wanted the area's below and thought that was part of "Greater Serbia". Serbia started shelling those cities. They shelled the historic monument of Dubrovnik. That is the only time in history that the castle of Dubrovnik was attacked. With the help of the U.N. Croatia and Serbia have peace now.
